Prayer is an integral part of the Catholic faith, with various forms of prayer presented in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. These include the four basic forms of prayer: adoration/blessing, contrition/repentance, thanksgiving/gratitude, and supplication/petition/intercession. Prayer allows Catholics to connect with God, express gratitude, seek forgiveness, and ask for guidance. While some prayers are formulaic, Catholics are encouraged to develop their own relationship with God through meditation and contemplation, which can take the form of vocal or mental prayer. Common Catholic prayers include the Lord's Prayer (Our Father), the Hail Mary, the Glory Be, and the Apostles' Creed. These prayers provide comfort, strength, and a sense of community for Catholics worldwide.

What You'll Learn

Prayer of Adoration/Blessing
Catholic prayers of adoration and blessing are an essential role in the life of a devout Catholic. Prayer allows Catholics to adore God, acknowledging His almighty power, and to bring their thanks, petitions, and sorrow for sin before Him.
One such prayer of adoration is the "Adoration Prayer":
> My Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that You are really here in this Sacrament. Night and day You remain here compassionate and loving. You call, You wait for, You welcome everyone who comes to visit You. I thank You, Jesus, my Divine Redeemer, for coming upon the earth for our sake.
Another prayer of adoration is the "Prayer for Guidance":
> Lord Jesus, may everything I do begin with You, continue with Your help, and end in Your glory. May I always seek to do what is right, just as You always do. Amen.
A prayer of blessing is the "Prayer for America":
> Father, we beg Your blessing for the Right to Life of our unborn brothers and sisters and for the conversion of all who support abortion.
Another prayer of blessing is the "Prayer Before Reading the Bible":
> Our Father, who art in heaven, sacred is Your name. Enlighten our minds with the light of Your glory, that we may understand Your Word and believe Your promises. May we love what You command and desire what You promise. Grant that we may meditate on it and do what it contains, for Christ's sake. Amen.

Prayer of Petition
In the Gospels, Jesus encourages us to place our needs before God in prayer. Through the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13), Jesus instructs us to ask God for what we need, trusting that God knows our needs and loves us enough to give us what is good for us. For example, in Matthew 7:9-11, Jesus says:
> "Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him."
At the same time, Jesus emphasizes in the Lord's Prayer that we need to express, along with our needs, our willingness to accept God's will. We should not be afraid to approach God with our needs and are encouraged to persevere in this type of prayer. In the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8), Jesus underscores the need to "pray always without becoming weary".
Prayers of petition are often spontaneous, such as "God, help me!". Every need can become the object of petition (CCC, No. 2633). We are encouraged to ask for God's help, especially in difficult times.
It is important to remember that prayer is not a form of bargaining, and God cannot be bribed. While it is natural to make promises or offer something in return when asking for something, this is not considered a proper part of petitionary prayer.
> O God, Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, I ask in His name fully confident that you will grant my petition as He promised us. In hope and joy I make this entreaty to your merciful love. Amen.
> Father in heaven, help me to believe and act always on Christ's word. Though the favour I seek is great, make my faith in Christ your Son even greater so that you may grant what I so trustfully ask of you. In Christ's name. Amen.
> Lord God, I will continue to ask, to seek, and to knock as Christ, your Son, instructed us. With faith in your love for us and with confidence in our Saviour's promises I keep asking, seeking, and knocking in His name for the favour I so much need. Amen.

Prayer of Intercession
Catholics believe that through intercessory prayer, they imitate Jesus, who prayed for others while on Earth and continues to intercede for them in heaven. This is supported by the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which defines intercessory prayer as "asking on behalf of another" (CCC 2647).
Daily Intercessions, or prayers of the gathered faithful, are an example of Prayer of Intercession. These prayers are written anew each week by congregations around the world, reflecting their unique perspectives on the needs of their local communities and the world at large.
When praying for others, Catholics are encouraged to be specific and consider the individual needs of those they are praying for. This can be done through vocal prayer, meditative prayer, or Lectio Divina, a traditional form of spiritual reading and meditation on Scripture.
By engaging in Prayer of Intercession, Catholics can develop a less self-centred outlook, foster a sense of community, and experience the power of intercessory prayer in their own lives and in the world.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
Prayer is an essential role in the life of a devout Catholic. It allows Catholics to adore God, bring their thanks, and present their petitions and sorrows. There are various forms of Catholic prayers, including prayers of blessing, petition, intercession, thanksgiving, and praise.
I thank you, Lord God, for this great country in which we live, for the freedoms we know, especially the freedom of religion, for the safety we know, for the rights we exercise, and for our government. I thank you for the gift of creation, for the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, and for the abundance that we have. I thank you for the gift of life — my life, the lives of my family and friends, and the lives of all humanity. I thank you for the salvation you offer me and my brothers and sisters through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the glorious communion of our Church.
We thank you, Father, for the gift of Jesus your Son, who came to our Earth and lived in a simple home. We have a greater appreciation of the value and dignity of the human family because he loved and was loved within its shelter. Bless us this day, and may we grow in love for each other in our family and so give thanks to you, the maker of all human families and our abiding peace.
For each new morning with its light, for rest and shelter of the night, for health and food, for love and friends, for everything thy goodness sends—we give thanks. We thank you for the presence and support of all the Catholics in this Diocese who gather every week in our parishes, who give so generously of their time, treasure, and talents, and who serve as faithful witnesses to others as disciples of Christ. We thank you for the gift of your Holy Word and for the Sacraments we are so privileged to celebrate and receive, especially in the Holy Mass.
We praise you and give you glory; we bless you for calling us to be your holy people. Remain in our hearts and guide us in our love and service. Help us to let our light shine before others and lead them to the way of faith. Holy Trinity of love, we praise you now and forever. Amen! We praise you, Father of all; we thank you for choosing us to give you glory.

You are our guardian and defender. You are our courage. You are our haven and our hope. You are our faith, our great consolation. You are our eternal life, Great and Wonderful Lord, God Almighty, Merciful Saviour. Amen.
