The University of Dayton (UD) is a Catholic, private research university in Dayton, Ohio, United States. The university was founded in 1850 by four members of the Society of Mary, also known as Marianists. The university began as St. Mary's School for Boys, with 14 primary students from Dayton. In September of the same year, the first boarding students arrived, and classes moved to a mansion. However, the school burned down five years later, and classes resumed within months.
In 1860, the school's enrolment had grown to nearly 100 students. During this time, the Civil War had little direct impact on the school, as most of the students were too young to serve. College preparatory classes began in 1861, along with a novitiate and school for Marianist candidates. The core of the Historic Campus, including Zehler Hall, was built starting in 1865.
In 1878, St. Mary's was incorporated as a college, and in 1882, it was authorised to confer degrees. The school became known as the University of Dayton in 1920 to reflect its connection to the city and its Catholic identity. In the same year, the university adopted the colours red and blue, symbolising loyalty to the country and love for Mary, the mother of Jesus, a central figure in the Marianist faith.
In 1935, the College of Women was established to increase enrolment during the Great Depression. However, the separate college was closed in 1937, and women were admitted to all classes, four decades before most Catholic universities allowed women. The University of Dayton has since grown to become one of the largest private universities in Ohio and is recognised as a leading Catholic institution of higher education.
