The Duke of Edinburgh title, named after the capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, has been created four times since 1726. It does not include any territorial landholdings and does not produce any revenue for the title holder.
The first creation of the title was by King George I on 26 July 1726, who bestowed it upon his grandson, Prince Frederick, who became the Prince of Wales in 1728. When Prince Frederick died in 1751, the title was passed on to his son, Prince George, who later became King George III in 1760. The title then ceased to exist.
