The hospital was established in response to the lack of an organized healthcare system in Buffalo, which had a rapidly growing and mostly Catholic working-class population. Bishop John Timon, the first prelate of the newly created Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, took it upon himself to address this issue.
