The Roman Catholic Diocese of Covington is a Latin Church diocese in Northern Kentucky, United States. The cathedral church of the diocese is the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington. The diocese covers 3,359 square miles and includes the city of Covington and the following Kentucky counties: Boone, Kenton, Campbell, Gallatin, Carroll, Grant, Owen, Pendleton, Harrison, Bracken, Robertson, Mason, Fleming, and Lewis.
The first Catholic immigrants to the Kentucky area came from Maryland in 1785. By 1796, approximately 300 Catholic families were living in the new state of Kentucky. Among the early missionaries was Stephen Badin, who set out on foot for Kentucky in 1793, sent by Bishop John Carroll of the Diocese of Baltimore. In 1808, Pope Pius VII erected the Diocese of Bardstown, covering Kentucky and parts of the American Midwest and South. St. Mary's Church, the first Catholic church in Covington, was dedicated in 1834.
In 1841, Pope Leo suppressed the Diocese of Bardstown and created the Diocese of Louisville in its place, with jurisdiction over the entire state. However, in 1853, Pope Pius IX erected the Diocese of Covington, taking its territory from the Diocese of Louisville. He appointed Reverend George Carrell, the president of Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, as its first bishop. The new diocese consisted of eastern Kentucky. Historically, the Catholic population of the diocese was composed primarily of descendants of German immigrants to Covington and Newport in the mid-19th century.
The second bishop of Covington, Reverend Augustus Toebbe, was appointed in 1869. During his tenure, he opened a boys' orphanage in Cold Spring, erected a hospital in Lexington, and established a diocesan seminary. He also introduced the Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd into the diocese. By the end of his tenure in 1884, the diocesan Catholic population had increased to 40,000, with 52 churches and 56 priests.
The Diocese of Covington has continued to grow and evolve over the years, with various bishops appointed by different Popes. In recent years, the diocese has been led by Bishop John Iffert, appointed by Pope Francis in 2021.
