St Mary's Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the cathedral parish of Perth. It is located at the peak of a hill in East Perth, at the centre of Victoria Square in Western Australia. The cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Perth, currently held by Timothy Costelloe.
The cathedral has a rich history. The square it stands on was originally named "Church Square" and had been set aside for the construction of a Church of England cathedral. However, the Anglicans of the time considered the location too far from the centre of the colony and instead built St George's Cathedral. This allowed for the Roman Catholic Church to claim the land, which was officially ceded to them on 13 August 1859. The construction of St Mary's Cathedral was funded in part by donations, including 1,000 scudi from Francis II of the Two Sicilies, and marble from the Benedictine brothers of the Monastery of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, which was used to construct the cathedral's altar.
The cathedral was constructed in three main phases, with the first phase completed in 1865. In the 1920s, plans were drawn up to replace the cathedral with a larger Perpendicular Gothic design, but construction was interrupted by the Great Depression. This left the new transept and sanctuary connected to the aisle of the original cathedral, which was retained as the nave of an expanded cathedral. The expanded cathedral was opened in 1930, but it was still considered incomplete. It wasn't until the late 1990s and early 2000s that funds were raised to complete the expansion project, which included a new curved design, a second spire, and an underground parish centre. The cathedral closed for construction in 2006 and reopened in December 2009.
In 2011, the remains of Perth's first bishop, John Brady, were exhumed from his grave in France and laid to rest in the crypt of St Mary's Cathedral.
