Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS) is one of South Carolina's largest healthcare systems, providing care to residents of Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina. SRHS celebrated 100 years of excellence in August 2021, having been founded on 29 August 1921, as Spartanburg General Hospital.
On 21 July 1919, Spartanburg General Hospital broke ground, with a newspaper article promising Spartanburg residents that they could look forward to one of the "best arranged and equipped hospitals in the entire South." Spartanburg General Hospital was organised under the authority of the South Carolina General Assembly in 1917. In its early years, Spartanburg General Hospital was devoted to establishing key services, and the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing graduated its first class in 1922.
The 1980s saw a new direction for Spartanburg General Hospital as it transitioned from a community institution to a regional tertiary care hospital. The hospital expanded its services to include home health and hospice programs, cardiac rehabilitation, and sleep disorder treatment. Spartanburg General Hospital also became a leader in cancer research, receiving a $150,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute in 1983 to participate in the National Community Clinical Oncology Program.
